Event 15 – The Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:28-36a

L About eight days after Jesus said this, he took M with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves L to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and K he was transfigured before them. M His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became K dazzling white, L as bright as a flash of lightening. K whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, L in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. K Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

M While he was still speaking a bright cloud K appeared and enveloped them L and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is K beloved Son, L whom I have chosen; M with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

When the disciples heard this they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”

K Suddenly, when they looked around they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
