Event 3 – The Second Cleansing of the Temple

Matthew 21:12-16; Mark 11:15-18; Luke 19:45-58

K On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out M all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers K and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.

And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: “‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”

M The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’?”

L Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people K heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. L Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
