Event 2 – The Temptation

Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13

L Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan K at once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, L He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

M The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Jesus answered, “It is written: man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. L “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” M Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him L in an instant all the kingdoms of the M world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me. L I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.” M Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

L When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him unto an opportune time M and angels came and attended him.
